House explosion in Maryland: Two people die, another injured

UPDATE (5:22 p.m.): At least two people were killed, including the homeowner and a utility worker, and a third person who lives in a neighboring home was injured.

A video of the aftermath shows that the house is now just a pile of rubble.

Several houses and buildings in the community were also damaged, leaving up to twelve families homeless.

Authorities believe the explosion was so violent that its impact could be felt up to 5 kilometers away.

The exact cause of the explosion is still under investigation. The state’s deputy fire marshal said, “There are no official reports of gas leaking from this area. No one called 911. No one called BGE, so the explosion is confined to this residence.”

BEL AIR, Mary. (NBC, KYMA/KECY) – At least one person was killed and two others injured in a house explosion in Maryland Sunday morning.

Firefighters were initially called to the Harford County home around 6:42 a.m. Eastern Time because of an outdoor gas leak.

According to authorities, a smell of gas was noticeable in the area. As emergency crews approached the scene, they discovered a field of debris and called for additional help.

All that remains of the house are piles of rubble and debris and it is unclear whether anyone was there.

Authorities are still assessing the damage in the neighborhood, but several buildings are believed to be affected, including a home right next door where a woman was injured.

The cause of the explosion is being investigated while search and rescue operations continue.
