GLENDALE, Ariz. – The Detroit Lions will try to stop Kyler Murray and the Arizona Cardinals’ potent offense today without the help of their leading tackler Alex Anzalone.

Anzalone will not be available for today’s game against the Cardinals because he suffered a brain injury last week in a helmet-to-helmet collision with teammate Derrick Barnes.

Anzalone practiced on a limited basis on Thursday and Friday as part of his return-to-play protocol and traveled with the team to Arizona. In two games, he recorded 17 tackles, including three for loss.

REACTION: Dan Campbell’s opinion of Lions fans hasn’t changed after he had to sell his house because of harassment

Lions coach Dan Campbell said Friday that Anzalone is still in the concussion therapy stage – the final step for a player is clearance from an independent neurologist – and expressed confidence in Anzalone’s potential successors.

Jack Campbell started the first two weeks at middle linebacker, but had to give way to Malcolm Rodriguez on some passing attempts. Both could get more playing time today.

“Hopefully he’s not out, but if he is, our roles will all be the same,” linebacker Derrick Barnes said. “I think Malcolm will be in there a lot and keep everything running. The best thing about our team is we have a lot of starters and a lot of guys that know what they’re doing out there on the field and are great playmakers, too. So we don’t see a huge drop in performance if Anzo doesn’t play.”

Cornerback Ennis Rakestraw Jr. (hamstring) and safety Ifeatu Melifonwu (Achilles tendon/ankle) were ruled out on Friday, and James Houston, Isaiah Williams, Colby Sorsdal and Gio Manu are also unavailable for the Lions.

Veteran receivers Allen Robinson and Tim Patrick, who were promoted from the practice squad to the game-day roster on Saturday, are both active.

Right tackle Kelvin Beachum is unavailable for the Cardinals (1-1) because of a hamstring injury he suffered in practice. Lions defensive end Aidan Hutchinson has 5.5 sacks against backup linemen in two games this season, including 4.5 last week against Tampa Bay Buccaneers backup right tackle Justin Skule.
