Jacksonville Jaguars coordinator Press Taylor talks about communication problems

Jacksonville Jaguars coordinator Press Taylor talks about communication problems

Three years into the Doug Pederson era, the Jacksonville Jaguars are still working out the finer points of their offense—a development that admittedly raises concerns in 2024.

This problem was particularly evident in Week 2 against the Cleveland Browns, when the Jaguars had to take two different timeouts in a goal-to-go situation to avoid delay of game penalties.

Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence took the blame for the first goal, but showed visible frustration on the field after the second.

And after more than 34 starts under Pederson and offensive coordinator Press Taylor, the frustration everywhere is understandable.

“No. We should be over it, yes, sir,” Taylor said Friday when asked if the Jaguars had overcome those problems.

“I’m sure there’s something like that somewhere. I’m sure we all have some responsibility for getting staff, taking the call, transmitting it, and interrupting it, yes.”

Heading into Week 3 and facing an offense that is averaging just 15 points per game, the Jaguars know their offensive communication needs to improve. To underscore the problem, the Jaguars face a hostile road situation on Monday Night Football against the Buffalo Bills.

The Jaguars need to make sure the issues are addressed in practice this week, especially in critical situations like third down and red zone.

The problems have occurred at the most inopportune times over the past two weeks and the Jaguars, Taylor and Pederson must ensure that this does not happen again.

“Yeah, that’s a big deal. And it was really in the red zone, where we always know that’s a problem because your substitutes travel as far as they can throughout the game,” Taylor said.

“So, you leave the player zone towards the red zone and try to get in and out quickly. We have to get in and out of the huddle. Sometimes an explosive play leads to that. That’s one of the problems we had the other day. Trevor (QB Trevor Lawrence) had the long fight, gets down there and then we have trouble getting in and out of the huddle.”
