Ukraine attacks offshore gas platform in Black Sea taken over by Russia after invasion

(WO) – On Saturday, Reuters reported that Ukraine successfully attacked and damaged a former offshore gas platform in the Black Sea used by Russian forces.

The offshore gas platform was reportedly used for GPS spoofing to disrupt civilian navigation. A Ukrainian Navy spokesman stressed that the platform was not used for civilian purposes and no civilians were present at the time of the attack.

Following Russia’s annexation of Crimea in 2014, Ukraine lost control of several offshore platforms. It claims these platforms have since been used by Russia for military purposes. This attack is part of Ukraine’s broader efforts to counter the Russian naval presence in the Black Sea and allows Kyiv to open a key maritime transit corridor.

The Black Sea is a significant theater of conflict as both sides seek control of strategic sea routes and infrastructure. Ukraine has increasingly employed innovative tactics such as the use of maritime drones and missiles to challenge Russian naval dominance in the region. These efforts have enabled Ukraine to secure vital supply lines and maintain its economic activity despite the ongoing war.
