Tampa International Airport refines Airside D concept • St Pete Catalyst

Tampa International Airport (TPA) has unveiled an updated concept for its future Airside D facility, scheduled to open in 2028. Designed to accommodate both domestic and international flights, the 16-gate facility is expected to improve the passenger experience and accommodate the region’s projected growth. TPA currently handles approximately 25 million passengers annually and is expected to increase to 35 million by 2037.

The preliminary rendering, completed this summer by construction firm Hensel Phelps, was presented to the Hillsborough County Aviation Authority board in August. This new design represents a significant tweak to the original building concept, which was awarded in 2023.

“The design phase is an iterative process driven by thorough research and analysis, as well as a careful assessment of facility and operational requirements in close collaboration with the airline, state and other partners,” said Smitha Radhakrishnan, TPA’s executive vice president of planning & development and maintenance, in a prepared statement. “We want this facility to deliver the world-class travel experience TPA guests expect, while keeping fiscal responsibility at the forefront every step of the way.”

The main features of the new Airside D concept include:

  • An orthogonal shape for more space and operational efficiency.
  • Two levels plus mezzanine with two airline lounges overlooking the airfield and the bay.
  • A processing area for arriving international passengers on the first floor.
  • A shuttle system and a guideway.
  • Centralized shopping and dining areas with 360-degree views of the gate.
  • Large, open spaces with intuitive wayfinding and natural light.

The updated concept maintains TPA’s reputation for convenience and customer service while reflecting the aesthetics of the Tampa Bay area. The approximately 55,500-square-foot building is expected to cost approximately $1.5 billion. This estimate takes into account the facility’s increased scope, size and complexity, as well as global inflation, supply chain challenges and rising labor costs. The project will be financed through a combination of airport reserves, bonds and grants.

TPA has also launched a new website, www.AscendTPA.com, to provide detailed information about Airside D and business opportunities. Final designs are expected to be completed in 2025, with groundbreaking and initial construction phases scheduled to begin later this year.
