Kyoto Station Breakfast Cafe is a hidden gem that tourists have yet to discover

Kyoto Station Breakfast Cafe is a hidden gem that tourists have yet to discover

Colorado Café serves its famous breakfast in a ramen bowl.

With many cafes opening late in the morning, finding a good place to eat breakfast in Japan can be difficult. However, there are some hidden gems if you know where to find them, and we recently discovered one where Kyoto Station.

Called World Coffee ColoradoThis café is one of four World Coffee branches in Kyoto and the chain has a history of about 50 years.

▼ The branch is called Colorado, but was born and raised in Kyoto.

This unassuming cafe serves its “morning menu” daily from 8am to 12pm, and unlike many other cafes in the area where you can get breakfast for around 2,000 yen (US$13.62), the prices here are very reasonable.

▼ Since the prices are less than half of those nearby, we can overlook the typo “Cologado Morning”.

The “Colorado Morning,” as it should be spelled, is the most popular option on the menu and is served with your beverage of choice.

▼ The iced coffee tastes especially good on a hot morning.

▼ The meal is larger than it looks on the menu and is served in a large donburi bowl.

It’s similar to what you’d find at a ramen restaurant, except instead of noodles, it contains toast, lettuce, potato salad, sausage, bacon, and scrambled eggs.

▼ The thickly sliced toast is particularly delicious.

Every component of the bowl is delicious and the ketchup bottle next to it is a nice touch as you can pour it over the scrambled eggs, creating an omurice (omelette rice) effect.

▼ There is no skimping on the sausage here.

The meal is big enough to keep you full until lunch. The only downside to the cafe is that smoking is allowed there, so keep that in mind if you are a non-smoker.

If you still fancy a quick, cheap breakfast at a famous Kyoto institution, keep an eye out for World Coffee Colorado on your next trip to Kyoto, located right outside the Hachijo Exit (South Exit) of the station.

▼ You can also wave to it from the Shinkansen, because you have a good view of it from the window.

After breakfast, there are many other must-see places to eat in Kyoto, including the National Garden, where you can eat in an imperial carriage, and Kichi Kichi, where the king of rice omelette is ready to serve you with a smile… and a song!
