Goodwill Industries of South Central California celebrated the opening of its new store and donation center in Porterville on August 6, expanding the company’s presence in the community.
Goodwill first opened its doors in the Porterville area in 2011. Since then, the nonprofit has created jobs for area residents and given a second life to clothing and goods donated by the community.
The new store at 1491 Olive Ave. is four times the size of the previous one. It offers shoppers an enhanced shopping experience in the 13,000 square foot store. Built from the ground up, the store also offers a drive-thru donation opportunity for local residents.
In addition to the current 13 employees, the new branch will create six full-time positions. These 19 full-time positions will be entitled to health, pension and other benefits.
“Our team is excited to provide local residents with jobs, training opportunities and a wider selection of items from small appliances and sporting equipment to home accessories and clothing,” said Jake Slayton, CEO and president of Goodwill Industries of South Central California.
Goodwill attributes the expansion to contributions from the local community, which have enabled the company to better fulfill its mission of providing job opportunities and skills development to people with barriers to employment.
Goodwill and the Porterville Chamber of Commerce hosted the grand opening celebration, which included a raffle.
“We are honored by the support the Porterville community has shown over the years,” Slayton said.
