Guests flock to Joshua Tree National Park to watch the Perseid meteor shower; the park advises stargazers to go elsewhere

Joshua Tree sees an influx of visitors ahead of the Perseid meteor shower, and Sunday night offers the best opportunity to catch a glimpse.

The visitor center parking lots were full. Tourists could be seen strolling through town and visiting the shops and restaurants, but stargazers are most excited about the big meteor.

The park has extended its opening hours and all visitor centers remain open until 10 p.m.

The peak of the shower will be between midnight and 2 a.m. on Sunday night.

According to NASA, viewers can see up to 100 meteors per hour.

Some tourists we spoke to say the park was definitely busier than usual. Others said they were unable to get a campsite for the night because the entire park was booked.

“We could only come during the week because everyone was coming for the meteor shower. It’s wild, crazy, the traffic is insane, but we’re happy to be close,” said Joshua Tree visitors Heather and Brittany.

Earlier this month, Joshua Tree National Park asked tourists to avoid the park if possible.

Last year’s meteor shower caused overcrowding and traffic problems.

It is said that any dark, rural place should offer good visibility at night.

Don’t worry if you miss the Sunday night show, because you’ll have another chance to see more meteors on Monday night.
