The Community of Madrid has announced that it is moving forward with significant improvements to the Avenida de América metro station, including the construction of a new access point and the installation of 10 additional elevators. The regional minister for housing, transport and infrastructure, Jorge Rodrigo, gave an update on the project during a visit. The works are currently 50% complete and are expected to be completed in early 2026.

Thanks to the modernisation, users can now access the station directly from Calle María de Molina through two new lifts, connecting them to the four lines of the Madrid Metro that serve Avenida de América (L6, L4, L9 and L7). “These lifts are part of the accessibility and modernisation plan that aims to improve the accessibility of the station,” explained Rodrigo.

The regional minister also pointed out that the access corridors to lines L6 and L7 are scheduled to open in September 2024 and the central platform on L7 is scheduled to be operational by October 2024. The project has been invested by the regional government with around 57 million euros. The modernizations include not only improvements in accessibility, but also improvements in waterproofing, drainage and sewage disposal, as well as the replacement of some materials to increase efficiency and durability.

Currently, around 70% of Madrid’s metro stations are accessible. The city company, which operates over 550 elevators, is committed to further improving this accessibility. In addition to the Avenida de América station, new elevators are planned for several other stations, including Ventas, Begoña, San Bernardo, Diego de León, Alonso Martínez and several others throughout the network. This initiative is part of an ongoing effort to make Madrid’s metro system more accessible for passengers with reduced mobility.
