New Publix, Aldi, Kroger and Fresh Market openings in Louisville

New Publix, Aldi, Kroger and Fresh Market openings in Louisville

A handful of grocery stores plan to open their doors in Louisville in the coming months and beyond.

The new stores are a mix of established Louisville-area brands, including Kroger, and new competitors such as Publix and BJ’s Wholesale Club. Almost all are located in eastern Jefferson County.

Here’s a look at the upcoming grocery store hours in Louisville.

A seventh Aldi location will soon open in Jefferson County.

The planned 22,000-square-foot grocery store is slated to open on the site of the former East Government Center on Shelbyville Road in Middletown.

The plan is to open the store “early next year,” said Laura Bauer, deputy department manager at Aldi, in July.

As part of the redevelopment of the site, a mixed-use building with retail and office space as well as air-conditioned storage units is also planned.

Louisville’s first BJ’s Wholesale Club is coming to Jefferson Mall next year.

The Massachusetts-based hypermarket company is building its first store in Kentucky on the site of the former Sears department store, the mall’s anchor.

The 9,300-square-foot store, which will be membership-based like competitors Sam’s Club and Costco, will also include a gas station.

At a groundbreaking event in June, company officials said the store is scheduled to open in spring 2025.

Louisville is set to open a second location of The Fresh Market.

The grocery store is expected to open in the fall in the former Barnes & Noble space at the Paddock Shops in eastern Jefferson County. The company is currently hiring for a variety of positions at the new location.

The North Carolina-based grocer also operates a store at 1805 Rudy Lane.

Barnes & Noble has now moved to a smaller store in the shopping center.

Work is well underway on Louisville’s newest Kroger and an opening date is expected to be announced soon.

The Cincinnati-based company filed plans with the city in March 2023 to build the 5,700-square-foot grocery store directly across from a planned Publix location, the Courier Journal previously reported.

A Kroger spokeswoman told the Courier Journal in July that an opening date would be announced soon.

Following its debut in Kentucky in early 2024, Publix is preparing to open two more locations in Jefferson County.

The company announced a future location at the northeast corner of Ballardsville and Brownsboro Roads in late 2021 and said at the time that it was targeting an opening in the first quarter of 2024.

In January 2024, a Publix spokesperson said there was no timeframe for the opening, a stance he reiterated in August 2024.

The project received permits for electricity and fire suppression systems in July. Publix’s website does not list any jobs for the new location.

Another planned location, 100 Flat Rock Road, was first announced in December 2022, with opening scheduled for the second quarter of this year.

In January 2024, a Publix spokesperson said the store was scheduled to open in late 2024. When reached in August, the spokesperson said he had no further information on the store’s opening date.

The planned 4,500 square meter store will have a pharmacy and an adjacent liquor store.

Florida-based Publix made waves in September 2021 when it announced its expansion plans to Kentucky, its eighth state.

In January, the state’s first Publix opened in Louisville at 2500 Terra Crossing Blvd. The 55,000-square-foot store features a drive-thru pharmacy and an adjacent 3,200-square-foot Publix Liquors store. It is the first store of its kind outside Florida.
