Fuel demand “muted,” SC gas prices fell 7 cents last week

CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) – Gasoline prices continue to fall across the country as the summer driving season comes to a close, experts say.

In South Carolina, prices fell 7 cents last week to an average of $3.02 per gallon, according to a GasBuddy survey of more than 3,000 gas stations in the state.

In the Palmetto State, prices are 25.6 cents per gallon less than a month ago and 43.9 cents lower than a year ago.

The cheapest gas station in the state cost $2.72 per gallon on Monday morning, while the most expensive cost $3.79, a difference of $1.07.

In the Tri-County, the cheapest gasoline was found at a gas station in North Charleston, where it cost $2.79 per gallon.

Nationally, the average price of gasoline fell 3.2 cents last week to $3.41 per gallon. The national average is down 11.6 cents from the previous month and is 42.5 cents lower than a year ago, according to GasBuddy data from more than 11 million weekly price reports across the country.

“As the summer season slowly winds down, we continue to see gasoline prices falling in most parts of the country as demand remains subdued. Incredibly, the price decline has also caused diesel prices to fall to their lowest levels since the Russian invasion of Ukraine,” said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy. “As long as we can avoid a major hurricane threatening refineries in the Gulf region, I believe the price decline could continue this week, with the national average potentially falling to its lowest level of the summer. However, if economic data comes in better than expected, we could still see a short-lived recovery. While some states, notably the Great Lakes and Florida, could also see gasoline prices rise due to routine price fluctuations, overall prices remain lower across all states than they were a year ago.”

The national average price for a gallon of diesel hit its lowest level since January 2022, falling 3.4 cents to an average of $3.72 per gallon last week.
