Free access to state parks for some Minnesota communities

Free access to state parks for some Minnesota communities

Since moving to Minnesota last September, I’ve learned one thing: This is a beautiful state. Of course, the lakes and rivers add to the state’s beauty.

The state is also “rich” in state parks that showcase this beauty on a daily basis, and the Department of Natural Resources has put together a program to help more state residents enjoy this beauty.

The state has provided free seven-day parking passes at certain libraries across the state to help remove a barrier to accessing state parks for residents of low-cost-of-living neighborhoods.

For a library to offer these cards, the average median income of community residents must be no higher than $58,000 per year and/or it must be located in a community where 40% of students meet federal free/reduced lunch criteria as of 2018.

The free passes can be picked up until June 2025 and are only valid for seven days. You must carry the pass in a visible location from your vehicle at all times while using it. Once your pass expires, you do not need to return it, but the DNR asks that you recycle it.

The library where you get your card may also lend you additional equipment or books along with your card. You must then return these to the library in a timely manner.

The free passes are only valid for the vehicle fees that may be charged when entering a state park. If you plan to camp there during your stay, you must make reservations and pay the associated camping fees.
