Man hits employee of a restaurant in La Grange: Police

LA GRANGE, IL – A Chicago man punched a restaurant employee last month after the employee offered him food, police said.

The 42-year-old man was arrested twice in La Grange last month. Patch obtained the police reports through a public records request.

On July 11, around 5 p.m., an employee at Nonna’s Goodlife Pizza, 42 S. La Grange Road, saw a man pacing outside the restaurant and harassing people, police reported.

The employee told police he went outside and asked the man, “Would you like something to eat?”

The man turned around and hit the employee in the face. Two cameras recorded the scene, police said.

Employees at the restaurant stood ready in case the man entered. One employee told police he grabbed a high chair to defend himself. Another armed himself with a broom.

Officers caught the man shortly afterward as he was leaving the store. He did not answer any questions.

Ten days later, the man was sitting on the back patio of a home on South Edgewood Avenue. It was 3:30 a.m.

The resident said he woke up because his dog heard something, the report said. He saw the 42-year-old eating a sandwich while candles were burning and the grill was on.

The resident turned on his back patio lights and called police, holding his gun ready to fire if the man entered, police said.

Police found the man in some bushes in the unlit side yard. An officer pointed his weapon at the man in the “deep ready position” and yelled, “Show me your hands!” the report said.

The man turned himself in. In an interview, the man said he was trying to pick up trash to earn money for a beer and a cigar, police said.

The man said he thought he was in the backyard for 15 minutes, although police saw surveillance footage that showed he was there for at least an hour and a half, police said. He sat down to try to sleep.

A complaint was filed against the man for trespassing.

At the man’s request, police took him to the Marriott hotel in Oak Brook, the report said.
