In New York, many foods contain chemicals that are used in rocket fuel

Leading health officials claim rocket fuel, which has been linked to “serious health problems,” is “contaminating our food and water.”

This is according to the consumer protection organization “Consumer Reports”, which states that “rocket fuel has been contaminating our food and water for years”.

Chemical from rocket fuel found in many foods

According to officials, perchlorate is a chemical used in rocket fuel, missiles, explosives, airbags and certain types of plastics.

According to Consumer Reports, the chemical is found in “a wide variety of fast foods and grocery items.”

“Our new findings come decades after perchlorate was first identified as a contaminant in water and food. Yet the problem continues to be largely neglected by federal agencies responsible for the safety of our food and water supplies,” CR explains.

Why parents should worry

The Consumer Reports report also gives parents cause for concern. According to the authorities, “the highest levels of perchlorate” were found in “foods popular with babies and children.”

People exposed to high levels of this chemical “may experience thyroid problems and also changes in hormone production.”

The chemical affects fetuses and young children more than adults because thyroid hormone levels can “impair brain and nervous system development.”

Perchlorate can affect an adult’s metabolism and increase the risk of “metabolic disorders” such as “type 2 diabetes.”

Rocket fuel was found in two thirds of the foods tested

According to Consumer Reports, perchlorate was found in over 66 percent of all foods tested from grocery stores and fast food chains.

The highest values were found in food in plastic containers, followed by food in plastic film and cardboard.

Fresh fruits, vegetables, baked goods, cereals, dairy products, meat and seafood also contained increased amounts of perchlorate.

Consumer Reports did not disclose the brand names of the products tested or where the products were purchased.

FDA and EPA must act

Authorities want FDA and EPA to take action.

“Because regulators have done so little so far, CR experts say the FDA and EPA could do a lot to improve the situation, especially because there is little consumers can do to avoid the chemical,” Consumer Reports says.
