For the past three years, Fortune has released its list of the 50 best places to live for families. Selected communities excelled in creating sustainable environments for residents of all ages. This year, a Delaware city took a spot in the middle of the rankings.

The publication evaluated more than 2,000 cities nationwide to determine the best places to live in each of the 50 states. These places were rated on nearly 200 data categories, and the top 50 scored highly in quality of life, financial stability, resources for older adults, education and well-being.

This year, Middletown ranked 23rd among the top 50 locations on Fortune’s 2024 list of Best Places to Live for Families.

Middletown on the list with other popular suburbs

Located in southern New Castle County, just 24 miles south of Wilmington and 24 miles north of the state capital of Dover, Middletown is one of several suburbs featured on the business magazine’s list.

Due to the impact of the pandemic, some of the fastest-growing places in the country are exurbs, according to the Census Bureau. Located on the outer edge of an urban area’s suburbs, exurbs provide an affordable alternative for those who cannot afford to live in busy metropolitan areas. The census does not provide an official definition of exurbs, but officials have clarified that these communities are generally defined by suburban housing developments that blend aspects of rural and urban life.

Census data shows the population of the once sleepy hamlet has grown 7%, from 23,386 residents in 2020 to 25,022 residents in 2023. Fortune attributes the town’s appeal to its low crime rate and good public schools. It notes that the median home price is $467,357 and the median household income is $99,462.

The city’s popularity has also spurred the growth of southern New Castle County. The region has experienced significant changes, transforming from its agricultural and natural origins with a few small towns to a bustling suburban community. The growth has transformed the area from agricultural and natural landscapes with a handful of small towns to a growing suburban bedroom community.

Other nearby suburbs that also made the top 50 list include Chantilly, Virginia, Silver Spring, Maryland and Upper Merion, Pennsylvania.
