WASHINGTON, NC (WITN) – The Louise R. Lester Foundation is supporting Beaufort County Community College’s efforts to combat food insecurity among students with a $10,000 grant.

The community college says it is looking for innovative ways to address the complex problem of students experiencing poverty. The initiative will enhance existing programs at the college with the goal of ensuring no student goes hungry.

According to the press release, 16% of households in Beaufort County receive SNAP benefits, higher than the national average of 13%, according to the U.S. Census.

BCCC says the Lester Foundation grant will provide much-needed financial support for the program.

“We are deeply grateful to the Louise R. Lester Foundation for their ongoing commitment to the well-being of our students,” said Serena Sullivan, vice president for institutional advancement. “This grant will allow us to significantly strengthen our food assistance programs and ensure our students receive the support necessary to succeed in their academic goals.”

The college reports that the funds will be used to expand food distribution on campus, with the goal of offering a wider variety of nutritious foods, fresh produce and complete meals, and providing access to microwaves and refrigerators across campus.

Students will be asked to complete a survey via a QR code about the options available and to help keep an inventory of the items they have taken.
