7 new and soon-to-open businesses in Birmingham – and a local restaurant we’re saying goodbye to

There are plenty of exciting new businesses opening across the city this summer. From the opening of a thrilling burger joint in Nashville this week to the reopening of a historic gem in Birmingham, here’s everything that’s new and opening soon in the Magic City.

And join us in saying goodbye to a local restaurant that we are painfully losing.

1. Garbage can storage | Bessemer

Have you ever wondered what happens to items returned to Amazon? A new store in Bessemer has the answer to that question.

Thanks to a revolutionary retail concept, shoppers can purchase items from top brands at a fraction of the price.

Bin Depot offers a dynamic pricing model where prices start at $14 on Fridays and decrease daily until they are just 50 cents on Thursdays. You can shop at bargain prices on a variety of products including electronics, home goods, clothing and toys.

2. The Carver Theater | Theater District

After five years and an impressive floor-to-ceiling renovation, the Carver Performing Arts Theatre – home of the Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame – is now officially open.

On Tuesday, August 6, the Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame hosted a grand opening ceremony for its new exhibit at the Carver Performing Arts Theater. The new exhibit features information and memorabilia on a small selection of the Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame’s 200+ members.

3. The Edge | Homewood

A highly anticipated new development in Homewood, The Edge, has begun a soft opening while the remaining tenants prepare for the official opening.

While The Edge is still receiving the finishing touches, some of its tenants are already open with limited hours:

  • Baba Java Coffee + Popbar: Monday-Wednesday 6:30 a.m.-4:00 p.m. | Thursday-Saturday 6:30 a.m.-6:00 p.m.
  • B’ham Burger: Daily 11:00–20:00
  • SushiBar: Daily 11:00–20:00
  • The Que*Bicle: Monday 11am-2pm | Wednesday-Friday 11:00-20:00 | Saturday: 2:00 p.m.–9:00 p.m. | Sunday, 2:00 p.m.–8:00 p.m.

4. Joyland |

Joyland – a popular Nashville burger joint – is coming to Avondale, in the former Rodney Scott’s building.

Founder and James Beard Award-winning chef Sean Brock has teamed up with the owners of Pihakis Restaurant Group and Southall Farm and Inn in Franklin, Tennessee, to bring Joyland to Birmingham this month.

5. Urban Shark | Parkside

Urban Hai, an authentic Atlanta-based Chinese restaurant, will open later this year in the Denham Building in Parkside.

Founded in 2022 by restaurateur Gary Lin and chef Hai Wang, Urban Hai is an authentic Chinese restaurant specializing in traditional dishes and Szechuan-style cuisine. They plan to open Urban Hai in the Denham Building by the end of the year.

6. Entry into Birmingham | Highway 280

Birmingham is getting its first charcuterie restaurant this fall. Located on Highway 280 near Greystone, this exciting new concept is the brainchild of local catering company Corrine Sweet.

7. Workout Anytime Gym | Irondale

Workout Anytime is a 24-hour gym opening soon in Irondale, seven days a week.

It offers:

  • Cardio and strength equipment
  • Cryolounge
  • Hydro massage
  • Infrared sauna
  • Individual and group training
  • Red light therapy

8. Cantina | West Homewood

The Cantina Tortilla Grill in West Homewood has closed.

In a statement to Bham Now, the Castros thanked their loyal customers at Cantina. Now they plan to put all their energy into Sol Y Luna, their popular restaurant in Lane Parke near the Birmingham Botanical Gardens.

We are sad to see this beloved local restaurant close.
