New York loses longtime news radio station in ESPN deal

New York loses longtime news radio station in ESPN deal

NEW YORK β€” Another era is coming to an end: News radio station WCBS 880 AM will end its programming in two weeks, nearly six decades after it first went on the air.

The parent company Audacy, based in Philadelphia, owns more than 230 radio stations in the USA.

Its brands include WCBS, WFAN and WINS in New York and SportsRadio 94WIP and KYW Newsradio in Philadelphia.

The company changed its name in 2017 following a merger with Entercom’s CBS Radio.

Audacy’s share price was 9.1 cents when the announcement was made on Monday.

Under a new deal, the 880 AM signal was leased to ESPN New York, which has been owned by Good Karma Brands since last summer, SportsBusinessJournal reported.

Good Karma Brands, a media and marketing company, was founded in 1997 by Craig Karmazin.

A three-year lease would take effect on August 26, the New York Times reported.

The announcement means that 1010 WINS, also owned by Audacy, will remain the last all-news station in New York. Its AM signal is the oldest continuously operating all-news station in the country, having been on the air since April 1965.

CBS 880 launched on news radio just over two years later in August 1967.

WINS will be simulcast on 92.3 FM in NY starting October 2023.

For residents of New Jersey and New York, 880 AM, along with 1010 WINS, is an important stop for getting up-to-date news and traffic information on the way to work in any direction and for any duration.

After the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, both news channels became indispensable to people seeking real-time information from Manhattan and supporting rescue and recovery efforts.

For baseball fans, Mets games will continue to air at 880 AM.

Yankees games continued to be broadcast on WFAN 660 AM/101.9 FM.

Phillies games continued to be broadcast on WIP 94.1 FM, also owned by Audacy.
