Workers install a new roof and build fields in Grippen Park

Grippen Park in West Endicott remains closed as extensive construction is underway as part of a $4.3 million improvement project.

One of the biggest steps in the park’s transformation was replacing the existing roof over the 50-year-old ice skating rink.

The original roof was removed in recent weeks and workers are now installing the new roof.

The ice rink was severely damaged by a flood in April 2005. Chemicals from the cooling system used to make ice were spilled after the flood. This ice making system was removed as part of the renovation project.

In winter, ice skating is possible. The ice surface is flooded when it is cold enough for ice to form.

Work on the new roof was completed this week. Further renovation work inside the building has already been completed.

Additional amenities will be added to Grippen Park in the coming weeks, including five pickleball courts and a basketball court. The project also includes a Wiffleball stadium and a flag football field.

Much of the park’s modernization work is expected to be completed during the current construction season.
