JACKSON, Tennessee – Moving is always a stressful project, and the threat of rental fraud can make it even worse.

Examples of scams include paying a security deposit without ever handing over the keys, paying for a home viewing, or false rental property advertisements.

Scammers steal photos and list homes that are not for rent. Some scammers even accept applications and fees for a home they don’t own.

To avoid rental fraud, be cautious of lower than usual prices and do your research.

Browse the listing and information online and view the property in person. You can also verify the property owner’s information.

If the landlord refuses to provide identification, he or she may be a fraudster.

You can also contact a licensed real estate agent to find out who owns a property or check the county property appraiser’s website.

“We receive about two to three reports a week from the West Tennessee area. Specifically from Madison County, Hardeman County and some surrounding counties,” said Toddnetta Trice, communications specialist at the Better Business Bureau.

The findings show that younger people are most often victims.

The Apartment List survey found that 19- to 29-year-olds are 42% more likely to become victims.
