NEW YORK – It’s the end of an era for local news in New York City.

WCBS880 will cease operations as a news-only station on August 26. Starting August 27, the station will relaunch with the new call sign WHSQ-AM and will become the new radio home of ESPN New York.

The move will leave New York City with only one all-news station. Audacy, which owns WCBS 880, also owns 1010 [email protected] FM, which will continue to broadcast news only.

New York Mets games will continue to air at 880 and stream via the Audacy app, the company said.

Radio station ends after almost 60 years

WCBS 880 went on the air for the first time in August 1967 as a pure news station.

“New York has always been proud to support two all-news stations, but the news business has gone through significant changes,” said Chris Oliviero, New York market president at Audacy. “The headwinds facing local journalism nationwide made it imperative to strategically reimagine how we deliver the news to have the greatest impact. WCBS 880 was one of the most respected radio stations in history, its legacy cemented by the hundreds of world-class journalists on the air and in private who brought it to life over the decades. If something was happening in New York or the world, you heard it on WCBS 880. Today, 1010 [email protected], equally iconic, marches forward as New York’s only 24/7 news station with the best distribution platform, largest audience and most recognized brand in the industry.”

WCBS 880 will take a look back at the station’s eventful history in a special broadcast entitled “WCBS 880 News: The People, Moments and Events That Shaped Our Lives” on August 22nd from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
