Nonprofit surprises formerly homeless mother with furniture for her Wilmington home – Daily News

Los Angeles-based nonprofit Holliday’s Helping Hands Foundation put together a welcome surprise for Alejandra Espanta, a local mother of three, on Monday, Aug. 12. The organization helped formerly homeless Espanta set up her new Wilmington apartment with furniture, decorations and plenty of warmth — all for free.

Katina Holliday, the nonprofit’s founder, said the moment she showed Espanta her newly furnished apartment was a moment of “overwhelming joy.”

“One of my goals is to help people turn a house into a home,” Holliday said. “It’s important to offer that help to help someone get their footing in life.”

Holliday founded Holliday’s Helping Hands in 2018, inspired by her grandmother, who “was always helping” the homeless. The organization now operates about 350 beds in transitional housing and provides additional support for former clients now living in permanent housing like Espanta.

Services offered by Holliday’s Helping Hands include therapy, group sessions, parenting classes and family reunification services.

“We help our clients find a plan for their lives and support them on their path to homeownership,” said Holliday.

Espanta, who lived on the streets for eight years, now has permanent housing and is caring for her three children, who started school on Monday for the 2024-25 school year.
