M-DCPS students can eat healthy as they return to school – WSVN 7News | Miami News, Weather, Sports

MIAMI (WSVN) – Miami-Dade Public Schools students will return to school later this week and a wide variety of healthy and delicious foods await them in the cafeteria.

School officials said they wanted to give parents the assurance that their children would be mentally and physically supported.

“All of these items have been reviewed and approved, and last school year over 700 items were taste tested by our own Miami-Dade County Public School students,” said Angie Kasselakis, M-DCPS nutrition officer.

To start the day, the district offers new and healthier alternatives such as Pan de Bono.

“Which are naturally gluten-free,” said Kasselakis.

But there are also other favorite foods of students, such as frittata or baked goods.

“One of our favorite meals among students is a super-sliced pumpkin bread that we offer,” she said. “We have our ham and Swiss cheese croissant, which is similar to what you would find at your favorite local coffee shop, but made with whole grain.”

Students have completely new options available for their lunch break in the cafeteria.

“Here we have our unbreaded chicken, we have our seasoned beef steak and here we have the same beef steak but with a Korean sauce. We’re trying to add more sauces to our menu,” said Kasselakis. “By popular demand, we have our square-cut pizza back.”

The best part about all the food is not only that it is nutritious, but it is also free for all students in the district.

“We want to make sure that what they see in their homes, they can also see in their school cafeterias,” Kasselakis said.

The school district believes that good grades start with a full stomach and a healthy body.

“It’s very important that students eat a healthy breakfast, or a healthy school breakfast and a healthy school lunch,” she said. “It helps them concentrate better. It can give them a nice energy boost in the morning that keeps them awake all day. Students are less irritable.”
