GREENE COUNTY, NC (WITN) – A possible tornado moved through Greene County overnight, striking several homes and farms, causing significant damage and destroying a mobile home.

As Tropical Storm Debby made landfall in Eastern Carolina, the Greene County Emergency Management Agency responded to reports of damage from a suspected tornado around 2:30 a.m. Thursday morning.

Four homes were hit hard and a mobile home off Highway 58 North was destroyed by the high winds and rain. Two farms were also hit. No one was hurt, but residents say the near misses have made them nervous.

“It literally came right by our house, a big tree broke off and fell in the yard,” said resident Nichole Jackson. “We live in a mobile home so we had to prepare that and it narrowly missed the house and flew right past it.”

A tornado warning was issued for Greene County around 2 a.m., and authorities believe destruction likely occurred just twenty minutes later. Residents say it’s a reminder of past storms that have hit Greene County.

“No storm damage, we were lucky there, but in 1984 I experienced a tornado and lost my home,” said resident Russ Jones, “the situation is just serious.”

People in Greene County are now preparing for what remains of Debby and urging everyone to protect themselves.

“It is better to be safe than sorry, so I definitely say stay home,” Jackson said.

Power line crews were also working throughout Thursday in Greene County to repair power lines that had fallen during the storm.
