WCBS 880 AM, one of New York City’s premier news radio stations for nearly 60 years, will be replaced by ESPN New York on August 26 as 1010 WINS becomes the premier radio station for real-time news coverage in the New York metropolitan area.

Audacy, the parent company of WCBS 880 and 1010 WINS, announced the agreement with Good Karma Brands, a sports media network, on August 12. The 880 AM station will become the new home of ESPN New York and, pending FCC approval, will use the call sign WHSQ-AM.

Audacy, formerly Radio.com, said 1010 WINS will become the only 24/7 news station for the tri-state area and will remain on 92.3 FM. However, because Audacy retains ownership of 880 AM and 92.3 FM, sports content produced by Audacy, including coverage of the New York Mets, will continue to air on the station.

“WCBS 880 is one of the most respected radio stations in history, with a legacy cemented by the hundreds of world-class journalists in radio and in private life who brought it to life over the decades. If it was happening in New York or the world, you heard it on WCBS 880,” said Chris Oliviero, president of Audacy’s New York market. “Today, 1010 [email protected] is equally iconic, New York’s only 24/7 news station with the best distribution platform, largest audience and most recognized brand in the industry. News is a pillar of Audacy, and this decision, while difficult, reinforces that leadership position for generations to come.”

In August 1967, WCBS 880 AM switched from music and radio to an all-news format. This year marked its 57th year on the air as one of two all-news radio stations in the tri-state area.

1010 WINS remains the oldest pure news channel in the USA

1010 WINS remains the oldest all-news AM radio station in the United States, providing millions of New Yorkers with local news, traffic and weather updates since April 1965. Audacy launched a simulcast on 92.3 FM in October 2022 and now has nearly two million listeners per week.

Audacy said the station will honor WCBS 880 with a live special broadcast, “WCBS 880 News: The People, the Moments and the Events That Shaped Our Lives,” on Aug. 22 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The program will feature interviews and historical clips from key moments in New York City history when the radio station delivered vital information to listeners across the region.
