College Station City Council members received an updated report from a 13-member Housing Action Plan Committee at their last meeting (August 8).

The group, which began its work in November 2023, is expected to present its final recommendations to the Council in September.

During the update, committee member Fred Dupriest said one reason for the lack of affordable housing in College Station is Texas A&M’s decision to increase enrollment by an average of 1,800 annually over the past decade. Dupriest called on A&M and the city to work together to build a student housing complex, possibly on city-owned land at Post Oak Mall.

David Brower of the city’s Office of Community Development says College Station is expected to be 4,000 housing units short in six years. Brower said the city needs more duplexes and townhouses.

Among other things, the committee learned that 40,000 people commute to College Station for work and that the average price of a home in College Station has increased 73 percent since 2015, while median family income has increased 26 percent.

The committee’s dual goals are to create more housing units and diverse housing types, and to create and maintain housing that is affordable for current and future community members.

The committee continues to ask residents to participate in an online survey.
