Massachusetts town named worst Airbnb rental town in the US

Massachusetts is a fantastic place to live and travel. From the picturesque beaches of Cape Cod to the famous Boston skyline to the beautiful mountains of the Berkshires to the west, Massachusetts truly has something for everyone.

Although Massachusetts is one of the most populous states in the United States, it also receives a significant number of tourists and visitors each year. According to visitma.comMassachusetts welcomes approximately 26.2 million domestic and 2.4 million international visitors annually. Direct spending by these visitors totaled over $10 BILLION in 2020, making the city a huge driving force in the Massachusetts economy and generating $879.9 million in state and local tax revenue.

Due to the large number of visitors that flock to Massachusetts each year, tourism is an extremely lucrative industry. Expedia reports that Massachusetts has nearly 16,000 hotels that accommodate the state’s nearly 30 million visitors. Like the rest of the country, the Bay State has seen an explosion in short-term and vacation rentals over the past decade. But not every Massachusetts town and community is open to short-term rentals or a good location. In fact, one Massachusetts town was recently named one of the worst places in the country to own a vacation property.

A new study by LawnStarter looked at the best and worst cities in the US for owning a vacation rental and compared over 180 of the largest US cities based on six categories. The factors considered were legal restrictions on short-term rentals, occupancy rates and revenue potential. In addition to a total of 18 metrics, they also looked at operating costs such as cleaning services and utilities.
