A Singapore Airlines B787-10 aircraft landed at Narita International Airport (NRT) in Tokyo with a technical brake problem.
Flight SQ638 departed Singapore Changi Airport (SIN) at 00:15 local time and arrived at NRT Airport as expected at around 07:30 local time.
The incident occurred on August 12, 2024, at around 07:38 local time, when the B787-10 aircraft landed safely on runway B (RWY16L/34R), albeit with smoke rising from the aircraft’s tires.
Narita Airport had to close the runway for about 50 minutes while mechanics checked the aircraft. The airline’s ground engineering team resolved the problem and replaced one of the B787-10’s tires.
All 260 passengers and 16 crew members on board the aircraft were safe and sound. However, the incident caused a delay to the return flight SQ637. The flight on the same aircraft took off at 13:28 local time, two hours after the scheduled departure time.
A Singapore Airlines spokesperson told media that flight SQ638 experienced a “technical problem” with the brakes after landing at Narita. The airline also apologized to customers who were inconvenienced by the incident.
The Narita Fire Department said that around 20 fire engines were deployed.
No fire was reported, but tire debris was found on the runway after the aircraft was towed.
