Attention, bargain hunters and bulk shoppers: Costco appears to be tightening its membership policies. In an update to its website, the company said that in the coming months, shoppers will be required to physically scan their cards at the store entrance and match them to the photo displayed for that card’s account. In other words, gone are the days of having to borrow a member’s card to pay without purchasing your own membership.

But don’t say goodbye to bulk shopping just yet: There are a few more ways to shop in-store without signing up for an annual membership—the price of which goes up $5 (to $65) on Sept. 1. Consider these “creative” solutions that will keep you in the loop even as Costco cracks down on non-member purchases.

Get a gift card

The official Costco policy states that anyone can shop at the warehouses by presenting a “Shop Card,” also called a gift card. These cards can be purchased at Costco, and electronic versions are available online. Here’s the catch: These cards can only be purchased by members and with a debit or credit card that matches the name on the Costco account. That means to take advantage of this loophole, you’ll need a friend with a membership who’s willing to buy a gift card for you.

Don’t worry about getting caught using this circumvention method – it is completely legal according to Costco’s policies. Costco Customer Service FAQ Page, “Non-members and members can use Costco Shop Cards to shop at all Costco stores in the US”

Once inside, you can pay for your goods using your personal payment method. That means you can use a $25 gift card to get in and then spend as much as you like.

Go with a friend

If the gift card method is too much of a hassle for you, there are other ways to shop at Costco as a non-member. The easiest is to have your Costco card-carrying friend accompany you and let you in as a guest. (You can even offer to treat them to a snack in the food court after shopping as a thank you.)

Shop online (fee applies)

While it’s not quite the same as strolling the aisles and making bulk purchases, don’t forget about the digital world. Costco.com offers many items for sale to non-members, often with only a small premium. It’s a great way to score those Costco-exclusive deals without setting foot in the store.
