Amy Jordan Dean, president of LG Jordan Oil & Gas Co. in Apex, North Carolina, looks back on the propane distributor’s 100th anniversary this year and believes its success is down to two key skills. First, the company has continually adapted to change. And second, it always takes advantage of every opportunity that comes its way.

“The world has changed, our local communities have changed and we have weathered (the changes) and thrived,” she says.

LG Jordan has pursued opportunities both internally and externally over the years. Internally, the propane dealer has expanded its service capabilities as it also distributes diesel fuel, heating oil and gasoline to residential and commercial customers. As an installer of propane tanks and propane and natural gas lines, it also sells and installs propane and natural gas appliances such as grills, space heaters and tankless water heaters.

LG Jordan, which serves a seven-county area and about 4,500 customers, plans to expand its installation, sales and service departments and increase its delivery service. The retailer also plans to expand its product offerings, services and market area and increase its employee count – all under the leadership of fifth-generation co-owner Carl Dean.

“Carl has spearheaded our efforts to redesign our brand, enhanced our marketing programs and presence, and worked with our team on technological advancements since joining the company three years ago,” said Amy Jordan Dean.

While the company’s internal improvements have been significant, the impact on others – outside the company – has been particularly evident in recent years.

First, LG Jordan has provided financial support to organizations in the Apex area, including churches, fire departments, police departments and schools.

It has also contributed to the Apex Skate Park, Halle Cultural Arts Center, Kidstown Playground, and Western Wake Crisis Ministry, not to mention providing financial support and volunteering for the Apex Lions Club, Apex Rotary Club, and YMCA of the Triangle.

In addition to its philanthropic efforts, the company is involved in several associations, including the Apex Chamber of Commerce, which has served as president for three generations of owners. In addition, co-owner Larry Jordan was president of the North Carolina Petroleum and Convenience Marketers Association.

Nationally, two of the current owners are actively involved in the Southeast Propane Alliance. In addition, Amy Jordan Dean is the North Carolina State Director on the board of the National Propane Gas Association.

In terms of leadership, two former owners served as mayors of Apex, while Larry Jordan served in the North Carolina House of Representatives. Additionally, Amy Jordan Dean is past president of the North Carolina Propane Gas Association.

“Because we are a family-owned business with three generations still in business, our employees know that we care about them because we are all family,” she says. “Our care for others is also felt outside of our company, as demonstrated by our involvement in charities, leadership roles and volunteerism.”

She adds: “By giving back, we have deep roots in our communities – roots that will continue to grow.
