Legendary news station WCBS 880 will permanently sign off

Audacy, the parent company of WCBS NewsRadio 880, just announced that the station will cease operations as an all-news station later this month.

Audacy also operates another news station based in New York City, 1010 WINS.

Audacy will keep 880 in its station inventory and it will become ESPN New York starting Monday, August 26. The WCBS call letters will be retired and replaced by WHSQ, pending FCC approval.

WCBS, known for its slogan “Traffic and weather together on a scale of 8,” premiered in August 1967.

“New York has always been proud to support two pure-play news radio brands, but the news business has undergone significant changes,” said Chris Oliviero, president of the New York market at Audacy, in a statement.

“WCBS 880 is one of the most respected radio stations in history. Its legacy was created by the hundreds of world-class journalists on and off the air who brought it to life over the decades.”

WCBS 880 will broadcast a live memorial special on Thursday, August 22nd from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. called “WCBS 880 News: The People, the Moments and the Events That Shaped Our Lives.”
