Local school districts provide food, clothing and hygiene items to students in need

SAN ANTONIO – As the new school year begins, many students may need extra support.

Several districts are providing essentials such as food and clothing so that children can focus on learning.

Here is a list of several school districts that support eligible students and their families:

Northside ISD

Northside ISD’s Northside Threads, launched by the NISD Family Engagement Project, provides families and students with pants, socks, shirts and essential hygiene items. Since opening in 2018, the program has served nearly 6,000 families.

For a student to be eligible for this free service, they must have a referral from their counselor. Northside Threads is located in the Northside ISD Family Engagement Center at 5223 Blessing.

The Engagement Center also includes a food market in partnership with the San Antonio Food Bank. The NISD market is open every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 1:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. and allows families to receive up to 25 pounds of food for free upon approval.

Both programs are in constant need of volunteers and donations of school-appropriate clothing.

Northeast ISD

Opened in 2017, North East ISD’s clothing closet provides its students with necessary clothing. Students can get a referral for a voucher from their counselor or school nurse.

Students are entitled to five pairs of tops, bottoms, socks and underwear per semester. NEISD accepts clothing and monetary donations at any time. Follow the donation guidelines here.

Southside ISD

Southside ISD offers San Antonio Threads where students can receive free clothing. Students can also contact their social worker or school nurse to receive clothing. The district accepts clothing donations at 10446 Sentinel St.

Comal ISD

Comal ISD has a PTA clothing closet where students can request a voucher from a nurse, counselor, or teacher. Students can shop at the closet twice per school year. Volunteers and donations are needed. The closet is located at 1298 Churchill Rd in New Braunfels.

Alamo Heights ISD

Alamo Heights ISD does not have a district-wide clothing closet, but offers assistance to students who need it. School counselors can help those interested find resources.

All districts only support students who attend the respective district, and eligibility ages range from 5 to 18. Please visit the program websites for more information.
