DVIDS – News – AMC Announces Winners of its 2024 Best Warrior and Troop Contest

FORT NOVOSEL, Alabama – Eighteen Army Materiel Command Soldiers competed July 27-30, 2024, for the chance to be named Army Materiel Command Soldier and Noncommissioned Officer of the Year.

“The Best Warrior Competition is about warfare and the Soldiers who participated are very confident,” said AMC Command Sgt. Maj. Jimmy Sellers. “This competition is about technical and tactical skills, our Soldiers have learned a lot and have gotten better every day.”

The 2024 AMC Best Warrior and Troop Competition included a series of physical fitness tests, marksmanship exercises, written and oral tests, and a challenging obstacle course. Competitors were drawn from the AMC’s major subordinate commands, with a mix of commissioned officers and noncommissioned officers being judged.

The AMC Noncommissioned Officer of the Year is Staff Sgt. Arron Thompson and the Soldier of the Year is Spc. Issac Larson, both of whom were also named AMC’s top squad members.
A standard squad consists of five soldiers, including: a squad leader with the rank of sergeant or staff sergeant, a team leader with the rank of sergeant or corporal, and three squad members with the rank of specialist or lower.

AMC’s squad includes:
• (Group Leader) Staff Sgt. Arron Thompson – US Army Contracting Command
• Sgt. Telvin Beauregard – U.S. Army Financial Management Command
• Spc. Issac Larson – U.S. Army Military Surface Deployment and Distribution Command
• Spc. Michaelslade Smith-Haven – US Army Installation Management Command – Europe
• Spc. John Fitzpatrick – US Army Aviation and Missile Command

Runners up:
• (Deputy Squad Leader) Sgt. 1st Class Angel Alemanmondragon – US Army Security Assistance Command
• (Deputy) Sgt. Margarita Ferreiramondragon – US Army Sustainment Command
• (Deputy) Pvt. 1st Class Taylen Green – Installation Management Command

Sellers expressed his appreciation to all participants and thanked them for their dedication and hard work throughout the competition.
“I congratulate every soldier participating in this year’s competition. I am very proud of each and every one of them and can’t wait to see them perform at Army level,” he said.

The competition culminated in an awards ceremony at Fort Novosel, where the winners were announced. They will then compete in the Army’s Best Squad Competition in October.
