NYPD seeks suspect in recent Central Park theft as police report increasing number of robberies – NBC New York

Police are searching for a suspect involved in a brazen late-night robbery in Central Park, as the New York Police Department warns that the number of robberies at the popular landmark has increased by 200%.

The latest robbery occurred around 1 a.m. on Tuesday in the square on the southeast edge of the park at the corner of 59th Street and 5th Avenue, according to the New York Police Department.

Police said three people were walking together when they were approached by a group of four people, and one person in that group pretended to have a firearm. One of the suspects took a pair of AirPods and a necklace, and when the group ran off, three of them were arrested, but one was able to escape, police said.

Police said no one was injured in the robbery, which is part of a disturbing trend this year.

The number of robberies on Central Park’s 2,000-acre site has increased 200% so far in 2024. According to the NYPD, 30 have occurred this year, compared to 10 at the same time last year.

“Several people surround people, rob them at knifepoint or gunpoint, sometimes they just rob people violently, so this is a problem that we need to get under control,” said the Deputy Commissioner for Public Information Tarik Sheppard tells NBC New York.

“It’s scary,” said Harry Lawton of Williamsburg. “It’s horrible and scary.”

The New York Police Department said it would increase patrols, install additional cameras throughout the park and use drones to cover a larger area.

“You can’t have a camera everywhere and watch the whole park. But we’ve done it before and we hope we can get the numbers down again and make people understand that Central Park is safe,” Sheppard said.
