The new incarnation of Hato Store is a London retail space for inspiration and collaboration from publisher Hato Press. The company recently closed its popular store at Coal Drops Yard in King’s Cross and reopened closer to home. It has opened its store next to its affiliated creative studio Hato Studio in the Golden Lane Estate, bringing all aspects of the brand under one roof.

Insights into Hato Store’s new retail concept

The space features Hato’s signature simple yet sophisticated approach to design and storytelling. In early 2024, the studio’s offices underwent an interior renovation by Faye Toogood to encourage collaboration within the Hato team. The studio has worked with the British designer since 2017 and her fashion brand is available in the Hato store. As part of this close design partnership, Toogood took on the challenge of designing the new incarnation of the store.

Toogood was inspired by the surroundings of the modernist Golden Lane Estate, a heritage-listed 1950s residential complex by Chamberlin, Powell and Bon. Her palette of industrial materials, including raw wood and stainless steel, serves as a backdrop to the display of pieces by Hato’s collaborators and friends.

A wonderful catalogue of books and merchandise is available for sale and to browse (including Hato’s latest studio cookbook) from the studio’s own collection of global design ephemera. With fall approaching, the new store will also feature ready-to-wear collections from names like Toogood, Xenia Telnut, Magniberg and the always wonderful Waste Yarn Project.
