US approves billion arms sale to Israel, including 50 F-15 jets

The US State Department has approved about $20 billion worth of potential arms sales to Israel, including a major order for up to 50 F-15 fighter jets worth over $18 billion. This package, one of the largest ever received by Israel, also includes medium tactical vehicles, air-to-air missiles, high-explosive mortar shells and tank shells. Congress was officially notified of these approvals by the Defense Security Cooperation Agency on Tuesday.

While Congress still has to approve the sales, the process has already begun after congressional leaders gave their tentative approval earlier this year. Lawmakers now have 30 days to block the sales, although that is unlikely. Delivery of the equipment, such as the F-15 jets, is not expected until 2029.

This arms deal has drawn criticism, particularly from those opposed to the Biden administration’s approach to the ongoing conflict in Gaza, which has resulted in numerous deaths. Critics argue that the US has not put enough pressure on Israel regarding its military actions in the Palestinian territories.

The timing of the announcement coincides with rising tensions in the Middle East following the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran and ahead of renewed ceasefire talks. The weapons are intended to strengthen Israel’s defense capabilities against regional threats, according to statements from US and Israeli defense officials.

Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant thanked US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin and Secretary of State Antony Blinken and stressed the importance of the agreement for Israel’s security.
