KEARNEY – The Kearney City Council approved the sale of a property to Kearney Community Sustainable Housing during its meeting Tuesday evening, August 13.

The purchase agreement was for Lot 2, Block 1, Village Plaza Second Addition, and the City received $20,000.00 for the sale.

The property is located north of West Railroad St. and immediately east of the 30th Ave. overpass.

The city council was informed that the sale would be used to build affordable housing.

The property was recently discussed at a meeting of the City of Kearney Planning Commission.

The City of Kearney recently attempted to rezone the property.

The area was last parcelled in 1999 and remains designated as an M-1 industrial zone, although it is surrounded by residential and commercial areas.

Rezoning the area would result in R-3 residential use, allowing single-family homes, duplexes, townhouses with up to six units, multi-family housing and various public uses.

A public hearing was held on the proposed acquisition of a 66-foot-wide permanent utility easement and a 10-foot-wide utility easement in southwest Kearney.

The acquisition of the easements will enable the development of infrastructure in the area.
