One of the country’s largest retailers is hard at work opening a new location on Jersey City’s West Side, with a Target store set to open in a prominent shopping center in the coming weeks.

Jersey Digs has broken the news that the Jersey City Planning Board has approved the new Target as early as May 2023. The site designated for construction of the massive store is 381 Route 440, covers approximately 39,000 square feet and is located not far from the massive Bayfront redevelopment along the Hackensack River.

Since then, much time has been spent demolishing a former K-Mart on the property, which is now complete. Construction crews are currently laying foundation on the property, which will be reconnected to the rest of the larger Stadium Plaza complex when completed.

Target’s plan, designed by Bignell Watkins Hasser, calls for the construction of a new one-story building to house the 11,300-square-foot store, along with 515 planned parking spaces and new signage. The plan for the site also includes 34 bicycle parking spaces.

Target already has a Jersey City store in Newport at 100 14th Street along the waterfront, but currently has no presence further inland. But that’s about to change dramatically: The company announced in 2022 that it will be the anchor tenant on the ground floor of Kushner’s One Journal Square project.

As the future Target on Route 440 grows, the race is officially on to see which of the planned Jersey City stores will open first. The company has not yet announced an expected timeline for the two stores.
