Burst natural gas pipeline closes Route 9 in Toms River

Burst natural gas pipeline closes Route 9 in Toms River

TOMS RIVER, NJ — Route 9 remains closed Wednesday morning after a construction crew damaged a natural gas line late Tuesday night, Toms River police said.

The road is closed in both directions between Cox Cro Road and Silverton Road, police said, because a crew working on widening the road struck a 10cm thick main in the middle of the road near Riverwood Road around 10.30pm on Tuesday.

The closure also affected businesses along Route 9. They had to remain closed until Route 9 reopened, police said.

The gas line runs directly to Autumn Ridge Apartments and Complete Care at Green Acres, police said. Evacuations were not deemed necessary Tuesday evening, but authorities were proceeding with caution.

New Jersey Natural Gas crews were on site throughout the night working to shut off and repair the gas line, which had been open for more than three hours, police said.

In addition, there is a 147-meter-long ditch along Route 9 that must be closed before the road can be reopened to traffic, police said. There is no estimate as to when the road can be reopened.

In addition to the Toms River Police Department, the Pleasant Plains Fire Department, New Jersey Natural Gas, the New Jersey State Police and the State Emergency Management Agency also responded.
