DC's Black Canary is "Best of the Best" in Tom King's new miniseries

Award-winning author Tom King will team up with artist Ryan Sook in November for a new Black canary limited series from DC Comics. In the story, Black Canary competes against Lady Shiva to become the best hand-to-hand combatant in the DC Universe.

DC unveils the cover and asks for Black Canary: The Best of the Best #1, which will be part of DC All In – the publisher’s new initiative that takes place after the events of its summer blockbuster event, Absolute power. The action-packed series features a main cover by series artist Ryan Sook as well as various covers, including a wraparound by Otto Schmidt (DC vs. Vampires: World War V), which shows the various appearances of Black Canary throughout the DC Universe. Black Canary: The Best of the Best No. 1 will be available in stores on November 27th.

DC’s promotion for the series suggests that Black Canary will be joined in the series by some of the DC Universe’s most experienced fighters: “Black Canary will face off against her toughest opponent yet, Lady Shiva, in a battle to determine who is the DC Universe’s best single-handed combatant. To make it to the final round, Black Canary will need all of her martial arts skills and prowess, plus additional training from some of DC’s most experienced fighters, including Batman, Wildcat, and even her mother, the original Black Canary!”

Black Canary prepares for the “Match of the Millenium” in new DC series

An epic showdown between Black Canary and martial arts grandmaster and assassin Lady Shiva is something writer Tom King has wanted to write for years. “I’ve wanted to tell this story for a few years now and I’m really excited to see what fans will see, what Ryan and I have planned for Dinah,” King said in DC’s press release announcing the series. “He has the perfect art style for this series and fans will feel every punch and kick from the first issue to the finale.”

McFarlane Toys unveils Huntress (The New 52) McFarlane Collector Edition #23 figure, available for pre-order starting in August.

Black Canary was one of the first female superheroes in the DC Comics universe. She made her debut in August 1947 as Dinah Drake and in October 1983 as Dinah Laurel Lance. The character was part of the Birds of Prey and the Justice League of America and is a skilled hand-to-hand combatant who, in newer versions of the character, also has metahuman abilities.

Black Canary: The Best of the Best Issue #1 will be available from DC Comics on November 27th.
