Restaurant of the week: The Coronet

Restaurant of the week: The Coronet

Each week we like to highlight one of our favorite restaurants in Tucson!

At the corner of Cushing Street and Meyer Avenue there is a group of concepts that have enough charm to attract anyone with an appetite for something new.

Whether you are visiting us intentionally or just passing through, The Crown, Coronet CaféAnd Nightjar are collective the cat’s meow thanks to Sally Kane and her team.

The location also has a certain history – we are talking about the late 1860s.

At that time, a family from Germany moved to Tucson and built a house on Meyer Avenue. In 1971, Kelly Rollings and partners took over the property and opened the Cushing Street Bar and Restaurant in early 1972.

Rollings had a keen eye for art and is responsible for the look of the property as well as many of the artworks, including the chandelier and the Cleopatra sculpture (originally made in France) that he imported from Mexico City, where they had lived since the late 1920s.

Kane opened The Coronet in 2014 (originally located on the corner of Fourth Avenue and Ninth Street) and moved the restaurant to its historic Cushing Street location in 2019, continuing the property’s journey and assembling a team that shares the same vision.

Sometimes it’s difficult to step off the beaten path and eat something new. For some, even thinking about eating something they’re not used to can be overwhelming.

The Coronet’s menu can be a great starting point to broaden your horizons.

Kane is sometimes asked what type of cuisine is served at The Coronet. It’s not always an easy question to answer, but it all boils down to a general love of food. She admires dishes from all over the world and the importance of the ingredients used in them.

The menu changes frequently, which is great for those who visit the restaurant often, but to give you a taste of what to expect (if you have never been there), treat yourself to the Venison Birria Bucatini or maybe the Fried salmon — this is served with marinated bubble-shaped shishitos, spiced red lentils and a chutney made from Moroccan olives and preserved lemon.

Perhaps the best part of visiting Coronet is the surprise when new dishes land on the seasonally inspired menu. The kitchen uses only fresh ingredients and 100% sustainable proteins and products from local bakers, producers and retailers.

Come with friends, make it a hot date or go alone! You don’t need a special occasion to visit The Coronet.

The Coronet is located at 198 W. Cushing St. For reservations, hours and more information about Nightjar and the Coronet Café, visit coronettucson.com.
