Charlottesville-Albemarle Airport receives .9 million for modernization

ALBEMARLE COUNTY, Va. (WVIR) – Charlottesville-Albemarle Airport is receiving $2.9 million in new federal funding to make critical improvements.

“To ensure our passengers are as safe as possible, we want to make sure we have the most modern equipment,” said Stewart Key, an airport spokesman.

The $2.9 million allocation means three things for Charlottesville Airport: improved security measures, a repaved runway and a new control tower to replace the current one.

“We’re working on how we’re going to use the security system upgrades,” Key said. “Then, of course, the new tower will be completely new, with the building and everything. To make that happen, these funds are being allocated to that.”

In the aviation sector, it is crucial to have a state-of-the-art infrastructure, says Key.

“Our tower is one of the oldest in Virginia,” Key said. “It dates back to 1970, and we can offer our FAA employees something new and, of course, maybe even a different view.”

As part of the bipartisan Infrastructure Act of 2021, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has provided $9 billion to airports across the country.

This is the third time Charlottesville has benefited from this law. Key says the city has used previous funds to build a new pedestrian walkway system and replace escalators.

She hopes that this year’s funding will contribute to a safer and more efficient travel experience.

“The most important thing for us is to ensure that this airport is convenient for our passengers, so we will do everything we can to ensure that their journey is not impacted,” Key said.

While Key says she doesn’t know exactly when these changes will be visible to passengers, most projects are expected to be completed in the next two to five years.
