A fire broke out Wednesday evening in a building that houses two restaurants in the historic Fish Alley district of Sea Isle City.

The fire occurred at 4210 Park Road, where adjacent restaurants Casa Taco and Casino Pizza are located.

Katherine Custer, Sea Isle city spokeswoman, said the fire broke out around 5 p.m. and was contained within about an hour.

“At this time, the fire appears to be out and we have no reports of injuries,” she said at 6:30 p.m.

Custer said Casa Taco was open at the time of the fire, but Casino Pizza was not.

Black smoke was pouring out of the roof of the building and flames were shooting out of the building, Custer said, pointing out that it was a “smoky fire.”

While firefighters fought the fire, Park Road was closed to traffic.

“For safety reasons, our police have evacuated the adjacent buildings,” Custer said.

The Sea Isle City Volunteer Fire Department received assistance from fire departments in neighboring Ocean City, Strathmere, Marmora, Ocean View, Avalon and Upper Township.

Custer said the cause of the fire is under investigation and that the Cape May County District Attorney’s Office and fire investigators will typically take over the investigation.

There was initially no information about the extent of the damage to the building.
