Second city issues temporary ban on new gas stations and grocery stores

No new gas stations or supermarkets in a Miami Valley city.

As reported in News Center 7 at 5:30, Kettering authorities imposed a 16-month construction freeze on all new gas stations and grocery stores.

Matt Greeson, Kettering’s city manager, said the pause will give city officials time to catch up and reevaluate certain measures.

“The first step is to update the comprehensive plan, the future zoning plan. The second step will be to actually update the laws,” Greeson said.

A longtime Kettering resident said he agreed with the freeze.

“We have too many gas stations. There is one on every corner,” he said.

According to our unofficial count, there are at least 20 petrol stations in Kettering.

Residents said they wanted the city to focus on other types of businesses.

“We don’t need more fast food restaurants… if you’re going to invest, do it right. Factories are good,” he said.

And that’s exactly what they’re trying to do, according to Kettering.

Greeson said they are focused on revitalizing the Kettering Business Park and the Miami Valley Research Park.

“Our strategic plan, which we recently adopted, focuses primarily on economic development and economic opportunities in our community,” he said.
