Pete Alonso hits two home runs as the Mets crush the Rockies to win the series

DENVER – The Mets haven’t seen that version of Pete Alonso often enough this season, but they were reminded Thursday that their hard-hitting first baseman has the potential to win a game.

It’s Coors Field, so the ball was flying, but Alonso hit two baskets with such authority that the situation was irrelevant.

With his bat sure to make a splash, the Mets had an easy afternoon before having to take another flight after a 9-1 win over the Rockies.

Alonso hit home runs in the first and third innings, and Mark Vientos added a hit in the fifth inning to provide plenty of support for David Peterson, who grew up in nearby Aurora, Colorado, in his homecoming game.

The Mets (61-54) won for the second consecutive year and the third time in four games, taking the series victory in the third period of this four-city trip.

In doing so, they gained a half-game lead over the Braves in the race for the NL’s third wild card.

The Mets are 4-3 on the road, with a three-game weekend series in Seattle still to come. The Mets traveled from Anaheim to St. Louis to Colorado last week.

Alonso hasn’t been particularly consistent in his final months before entering free agency this season – most notably his .694 OPS against runners in scoring position – but he still has a chance to hit 40 home runs for the third consecutive season.

With his two home runs on Thursday, Alonso hit his 25th home run this season.

Alonso was asked if he still had the strength to hit 40 home runs.

“Absolutely,” Alonso said. “I think there are ups and downs throughout the season and ultimately I just want to help the team win. I just want to do my best and help this team get to the playoffs.”

The Mets quickly attacked left-hander Austin Gomber.

Francisco Lindor, whose two-run single had given the Mets the final lead in the ninth inning the night before, opened the game with a double.

Jose Iglesias and JD Martinez each hit a double to give the Mets a 2-0 lead before Alonso hit the second-longest home run of his career with a 471-foot rocket to left-center field.

Alonso hit another home run in the top of the third inning, giving him the 21st multi-home run game of his career and the second this season. The other game this year came on April 13 against the Royals at Citi Field.

“We’ve talked about how strong our lineup is, and (Alonso) has been good and bad at times,” manager Carlos Mendoza said. “But he can carry a team for quite a long time, and we saw that today. He hit two balls and hit them pretty far, and that’s who he is. I think a lot of people have seen that before and hope he gets going here and can show us what kind of hitter he is.”

Alonso had to settle for a single and two strikeouts in his three remaining at-bats on the afternoon and was asked if he was thinking about a three-home run game.

“Honestly, I just want to continue to have good hitting opportunities and do my best, just stick to my plan and my approach,” Alonso said. “Home runs can be happy accidents, just the result of taking advantage of a good pitch and hitting it hard into the big part of the field.”

Vientos’ two-run home run in the fifth inning put the Rockies in a 7-0 hole. Alonso hit a single with two outs in the inning before Vientos cleared the left-field fence.

Peterson loaded all bases in the fifth inning, but only managed a single run scored on Brenton Doyle’s sacrifice fly.

Peterson lasted five innings, allowing one earned run on four hits with five strikeouts and three walks. Adam Ottavino, Ryne Stanek and Danny Young combined to pitch the final four innings behind Peterson.

The Mets extended their lead to 9-1 in the eighth inning with Lindor’s RBI single and Iglesias’ sacrifice fly.

Tyrone Taylor doubled in the inning after Harrison Bader was hit by a pitch.

“We had good at-bats from the first pitch of the game,” Mendoza said.
