Employee of Ellenton Premium Outlets jewelry store exchanges gunfire with robbers

Shots were fired during an armed robbery at a jewelry store in the Ellenton Premium Outlets on Wednesday, the sheriff’s office said.

The Manatee County Sheriff’s Office said no one was injured and nothing was stolen during the attempted robbery. Two men fled the scene before officers could arrest them, according to a news release.

Two unidentified men wearing masks and blue shirts entered the Gold Palace jewelry store at Ellenton Premium Outlets, 5295 Factory Shops Blvd., Ellenton, around 2:50 p.m., according to a news release. The sheriff’s office said they were armed with at least one handgun.

After entering the store, one of the men approached an employee and fired toward the back of the store, according to the sheriff’s office. The shot did not hit anyone, officials said.

In response, the sheriff’s office said, an employee pulled out a gun and fired in the direction of the suspected armed robbers, but missed.

According to a press release, no one was hit by the shots.

The sheriff’s office said the two men then fled the store and ran toward the parking lot, where they were pursued by an off-duty deputy who was on the property and arrived at the store shortly after the shooting.

The off-duty deputy secured the store and made sure no one was injured before confronting the two unknown men, who drove away in what appeared to be a silver Toyota Highlander, according to the sheriff’s office.

Paramedics were called for a person inside the store who suffered a medical emergency after the incident, but the sheriff’s office reported that no one was struck by gunfire during the attempted robbery.

According to the sheriff’s office, the investigation is still active.
