Britain says Ukraine can use donated weapons in Russia, except for Storm Shadows

British weapons are permitted to be used by Ukrainian forces in operations on Russian territory, but restrictions remain on the use of long-range Storm Shadow missiles.

The British Ministry of Defense announced this on Thursday, Ukrinform reports, citing Reuters.

“We make it clear during the donation process that the equipment must be used in accordance with international law,” said a spokesman for the British Ministry of Defense.

This arrangement means that British tanks, anti-tank missiles and other military equipment given to Ukraine can be used inside Russia as part of the country’s defence against a Russian invasion.

However, restrictions remain on the use of the Storm Shadow long-range missiles supplied from Great Britain, which may only be used within Ukraine’s internationally recognized borders.

According to the House of Commons Library, which publishes research, Britain has pledged £7.6 billion ($9.77 billion) in military aid to Ukraine since the Russian invasion began in February 2022.

These include 14 British battle tanks from last year, as well as armoured vehicles, ammunition, air defence systems, electronic warfare equipment and artillery.

But Britain, like other Western governments, has so far refused to allow Ukraine to use long-range weapons because it fears the risk of an escalation of the conflict.
