  • Fonterra, a dairy cooperative based in New Zealand, joins forces with natural ingredients manufacturer Superbrewed Food to promote sustainable food production, the two companies said.
  • The partnership will combine Superbrewed’s biomass protein platform with Fonterra’s dairy processing, ingredients and application technology to develop a nutrient-rich, functional biomass protein.
  • The collaboration aims to meet growing consumer demand for protein and is based on the postbiotic cultured protein previously launched and patented by Superbrewed.

Diving insight:

Postbiotics have gained significant importance in the food and beverage industry in recent years. They are included in the ingredient list of numerous consumer products with the promise of improved gut health.

By evaluating the ingredients, Fonterra was able to determine the function and nutrition of postebiotic cultured protein that can complement dairy ingredients in foods. And Superbrewed Foods demonstrated how its fermentation platform can be adapted to ferment other ingredients.

The aim of the multi-year partnership is to develop new biomass protein solutions based on the fermentation of several feedstocks, including Fonterra’s lactose permeate, which is produced during milk processing. The aim is to add value to lactose by converting it into sustainable protein.

“Partnering with Superbrewed Foods is a fantastic opportunity. Their cutting-edge technology aligns with our mission to provide sustainable nutrition solutions to the world and respond to global demand for protein solutions to create more value from milk for our farmers,” said Chris Ireland, General Manager of Innovation Partnerships at Fonterra.

Superbrewed Food is trying to expand its reach in the U.S. market. In March, the company received the green light from the Food and Drug Administration for its postbiotic cultured protein, which can now be used by food and beverage manufacturers in the dairy and dairy alternative space.

The company also received a U.S. patent for its postbiotic protein, granting it 18 years of market exclusivity to produce, use and commercialize all forms of bacterial biomass proteins.

“We are delighted to partner with a company of Fonterra’s caliber that recognizes the value of bringing postbiotic cultured protein to market and represents a critical step in expanding our offering of biomass ingredients that further contribute to sustainable food production,” said Byran Tracy, CEO of Superbrewed Food, in a statement.

The protein ingredients market is expected to reach nearly $86 billion by 2028, an increase of 41% over the previous year. According to a report by Markets and Marketswith increasing consumer awareness of nutrition driving demand.
