Steel frame for new clinic building at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center in place

In West Carson, the steel framework of the Harbor-UCLA Medical Center campus, currently in the midst of a $1.7 billion renovation, continues to take shape.

The centerpiece of the project, a six-story clinical building, will be built adjacent to the hospital’s main building along Vermont Avenue. The approximately 35,000-square-foot building will house outpatient clinics and related services on the lower floors, conference and training rooms on the fourth floor, and offices for physicians and administrative staff on the top two floors.

The layout and distribution of services throughout the building has been determined with patient care in mind. Patients with reduced mobility have easier access to an orthopedic clinic and a rehabilitation facility on the ground floor, as well as visiting laboratories and other frequently used spaces. Specialty clinics with less regular traffic are located one floor higher, while the third floor of the building offers services for patients from prenatal to adulthood.

Hensel Phelps, HMC Architects and CO Architects form the design-build team for the clinic construction. Completion is planned for autumn 2026.

Other components of the hospital site transformation include the construction of a 51,000-square-foot patient tower with 346 beds, a helipad, a new parking garage, a warehouse, laboratories and various ancillary facilities.

The new building is the result of federal law SB 1953, which requires California hospitals to upgrade or remodel their aging facilities to be earthquake-proof by 2030. Numerous other medical centers in Los Angeles County, including Cedars-Sinai and Kaiser Permanente, have recently undertaken similar efforts.
