Some airports in northern Iowa are receiving nearly $1.7 million in state funding for various upgrades and improvements.

The Iowa Transportation Commission on Tuesday approved a total of $9.3 million for the State Aviation Program in fiscal year 2025 to help about two dozen airports across the state cover most, if not all, of the costs of their planned projects.

A $400,000 Airport Development Grant will go to Northeast Iowa Regional Airport in Charles City to build a taxiway. The total cost of the project is nearly $584,000. The airport also received a $300,000 General Aviation Vertical Infrastructure Grant to build a T-hangar. The total cost is $540,000.

Bill Kyle says this will significantly improve the airport’s service.

Nearly $383,000 in airport development grants will go toward a total project valued at nearly $547,000 to build a runway for hangars at Mason City Municipal Airport, while Osage Municipal Airport will receive $54,000 for an airport site plan and description, bringing the total projected cost to $68,000.

Decorah Municipal Airport will also receive a $300,000 general aviation vertical infrastructure grant to build a hangar and terminal, with total costs estimated at $417,000.

A $121,000 Commercial Service Vertical Infrastructure grant will cover nearly half the cost of improvements to the Mason City Municipal Airport terminal site, including demolition and site restoration. Waterloo Regional Airport will receive the full $125,000 from the state for hangar improvements and terminal interior upgrades.
